Dolby Launches "Conversations with Sound Artists" Podcast Series

The Dolby Institute and Soundworks Collection are launching a 10-part podcast series, Conversations with Sound Artists, bringing insight into the film, gaming, television industry. Glenn Kiser, Director of Dolby Institute at Dolby Laboratories, and Michael Coleman of Soundworks Collection, speak with top industry creatives and beginning Tuesday, August 25, 2015, Dolby Institute and Soundworks Collection will be publishing an hour-long podcast episode each week with topics ranging from cinematic sound design and sound mixing, and sound design for video games, television and more.

In keeping with Dolby’s history of supporting artists, Dolby Institute engages and empowers artists by providing education, inspiration and support throughout the creative process. With this podcast series, Dolby Institute hopes to empower next generation content creators and help unlock the power of sound and image technologies to help tell their stories.

Ep. 1 - Sound Design: Writing for Sound (Feat. Randy Thom)

Release date: Tuesday, August 25
Skywalker Sound’s Director of Sound Design Randy Thom discusses with Dolby Institute’s Glenn Kiser how writers and directors can use sound as a tool to tell their stories, the importance of APOCALYPSE NOW to modern sound design, his work with Robert Zemeckis to maroon Tom Hanks on an island in CAST AWAY with no music or wildlife sounds, and what’s wrong with the current state of sound for animated films.

Creative sound design for documentaries is often not the first thing that people think about—in this episode sound designer/mixer Coll Anderson discusses the role that creative postproduction sound can serve in telling non-narrative stories.

Ep. 4 - The Art of Sound Mixing (Feat. Anna Behlmer)

Release date: Tuesday, September 15
The final stage of any collaborative process requires a delicate balance between artistry and curation. The sound mixer works closely with the Director to make sure that every sound is in its right place and that the story is always front and center. This episode gives audiences a peek into the final stage of sound production and also an education of how sound works and is delivered onto their screens.

Ep. 5 - Dialog Editing & ADR (Feat. Gwen Whittle Yates)

Editing dialog and working with the original recordings from set is one of the most under-appreciated arts in cinema sound. Two time Academy Award nominee Gwen Whittle Yates discusses with us all the work and art that goes into making the dialog in movies and tv sound good.

Ep. 6 - Sound for Television (Feat. Daniel Colman)

In this episode we talk with Daniel Colman, Emmy award-winning sound designer of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and MARVEL’S AGENTS OF SHIELD about his experience producing amazing sound on a budget for television.
