Google Presents - Inside Abbey Road
Source: Ultimate Classic Rock
Inside Abbey Road is a site built by Google in partnership with Abbey Road Studios. The aim is to enable anyone in the world to follow in the footsteps of musical legends, and step inside the famous British recording studio as it’s never been seen before. Once inside, you can explore every nook and cranny of the three recording studios, and discover stories, images, videos and music spanning the decades. You can also be guided around by producer Giles Martin, Head of Audio Products Mirek Stiles, or broadcaster Lauren Laverne, and even play with interactive versions of pioneering Abbey Road Studios equipment.
Inside Abbey Road is a collaboration between Google and Abbey Road Studios, and is not endorsed by the artists featured.
VISIT ABBEY ROAD:
Since 1931, Abbey Road Studios has played host to some of the greatest musicians in the world. Now, thanks to Google, you can tour the facility without even getting off your couch.
The tech giant’s new Inside Abbey Road project, developed in collaboration with the historic facility, lets users virtually explore each of the three main studios and one mastering suite with more than 150 different 360-degree panoramic images, YouTube videos and archival images that span from the London Symphony Orchestra opening the studios in 1931 to Jay Z discussing the recording of his Magna Carta LP.
The site also includes an array of specially designed interactive gadgets, including a version of the J37 four-track recorder that was used to capture the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band LP, as well as visual demonstrations that offer a glimpse of things like the process behind cutting vinyl.
“Abbey Road Studios has been a hive of creativity and source of world-class recordings for more than 80 years,” points out producer Giles Martin. “The artists using the studios have sold countless millions of records and have helped create popular culture as we know it today. It’s an inspirational place and an honour for me to work there today. This collaboration with Google gives the outside world a great insight into the everyday workings of the studio and allows anyone to glimpse the magic that goes on inside the world’s most famous recording studio.”
“We’re always looking at how we can use technology to bring people closer to cultural icons and institutions around the world,” adds Google project lead Tom Seymour. “With Inside Abbey Road, we wanted to open the doors to the iconic music studio for anyone in the world to step inside and experience the stories, the sounds, the people and the equipment that make Abbey Road Studios what it is today.”
For Abbey Road Studios Managing Director Isabel Garvey, it’s a fitting tribute to a musical landmark. “We’re best known for some of the amazing music created at the studios,” he says. “But Inside Abbey Road gives music fans — and musicians — unprecedented access to find out a lot more about the studio’s role in unleashing some of this creativity, whether that’s with legendary artists known all over the world or those just starting out.”
