Ryan Coogler: The Sound and Music of Creed and Fruitvale Station

December 13, 2016 12:00am

In this special podcast presentation of our recent Dolby Institute master class at the Los Angeles Film Festival, writer/director Ryan Coogler is joined by his composer Ludwig Göransson and sound designer Steve Boeddeker to present clips and discuss their use of sound and music in Creed and Fruitvale Station.

Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan) never knew his famous father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who died before he was born. Still, there's no denying that boxing is in his blood, so Adonis heads to Philadelphia, the site of Apollo Creed's legendary match with a tough upstart named Rocky Balboa.

Though he once spent time in San Quentin, 22-year-old black man Oscar Grant (Michael B. Jordan) is now trying hard to live a clean life and support his girlfriend (Melonie Diaz) and young daughter (Ariana Neal). Flashbacks reveal the last day in Oscar's life, in which he accompanied his family and friends to San Francisco to watch fireworks on New Year's Eve, and, on the way back home, became swept up in an altercation with police that ended in tragedy. Based on a true story.
