Pete Horner - 2016 Sundance Institute Music and Sound Design Lab
In this exclusive interview we chat with Sound Designer and Re-recording Mixer Pete Horner about his involvement as a mentor at the 2016 Sundance Institute Music and Sound Design Lab at Skywalker Sound and his experience working on independent films.
About Pete Horner:
Pete Horner is an Emmy-winning sound designer and re-recording mixer at Skywalker Sound. He studied percussion and music recording at the Cleveland Institute of Music and discovered the musicality of film sound at American Zoetrope working on films such as: Apocalypse Now Redux, The Virgin Suicides, and a 5.1 remix of The Conversation. At Skywalker he has worked on a range of projects from the family film How To Train Your Dragon to Errol Morris’s Abu Ghraib prison doc, Standard Operating Procedure. In 2007, Walter Murch asked him to work as sound designer and mixer on Francis Coppola’s Youth Without Youth, and in 2009 as a mixer on Tetro. In 2012 he designed and mixed Philip Kaufman’s Hemingway and Gellhorn, for which he won an Emmy. In 2013 he won the Sundance Special Jury Prize for Sound Design for his work on Upstream Color. He most recently finished mixing Jurassic World, directed by Colin Trevorrow.
About the 2016 Sundance Institute Music and Sound Design Lab:
The Sundance Institute Music and Sound Design Labs provide a space for composers, directors and sound designers to collaborate on the process of providing music and sound for film. Fellows participate in workshops and creative exercises under the guidance of leading film composers and film music professionals acting as Creative Advisors. Each composer/director team will have their original scores for new independent film scenes performed live by a chamber orchestra.
