SoundWorks Collection Interview Series - The Sound of The Hateful Eight with Production Sound Mixer Mark Ulano
Today we chat with Production Sound Mixer Mark Ulano who recently worked on Director Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight and shared several stories about working in the cold shooting conditions, the director’s no cell phone on set policy, and the smashing of a vintage Martin guitar by mistake.
ABOUT MARK ULANO:
Mark Ulano has been recording sound for film professionally since 1976. He is currently in his first term as President of the CAS and has sat seven terms as an active board member. He also serves on the AMPAS Sound Branch Executive Committee and has been on the Board of Directors of IATSE Local 695 since 1993.
His work on TITANIC won him a Cinema Audio Society Award for Best Sound mixing for a Feature Film, an Academy Award for Sound Mixing and a BAFTA nomination. He was also nominated by the CAS for sound mixing on Super 8 and IRON MAN and nominated for an Oscar for INGLORIOUS BASTERDS. He has received 2 other BAFTA nominations, for KILL BILL VOL. I and DJANGO UNCHAINED and has received two Golden Reel Awards from the Motion Picture Sound Editors for his mixing work as well as a Golden Satellite nomination.
Mark is currently working on Quentin Tarantino’s HATEFUL EIGHT and has recently mixed THE JUDGE, UNFINISHED BUSINESS, THE MASTER, DJANGO UNCHAINED, SUPER 8, COWBOYS & ALIENS and THE TOURIST. He has well over a 130 film and television credits as a Production Sound Mixer.
He has been a speaker at a variety of professional sound for film gatherings, including AES 2014, CAS/Mix Immersive Sound Conference, The BAFTA Guru Project, The Annapurna On-line Film Academy, The Directors Guild of America, The School of Visual Arts. the Rycote World Sound Symposium, The Norwegian Bjoksjo Sound Symposium, The Bejing Film Academy, LAUSD, Digital Video Expo.
Mr Ulano continues to write articles, columns and reviews for several publications including The CAS Journal, The 695 Quarterly, Pro Audio Review and others. He is also in the final stages of completing a comprehensive text on the work of Production Sound Mixing and since 1999, has taught his week-long intensive production sound class at the Maine Media Workshops in Rockport, ME.
Mark has also headed up the sound restoration project at Los Angele’s South West Museum, a 25 year effort nearing completion, preserving the museum’s rare cylinder record collection of early Indian and Spanish recordings dating back to 1897.
Mark’s original training was as a percussionist (2nd generation) and continues his musical activities in a 7 piece rehearsal jazz band.
