The Dolby Institute presents this year’s coverage of the Academy Awards. Like last year, they have compiled interviews from each of the nominees in the Best Sound category. So, if you are an Oscar voter — either as an Academy member or as a fan participating in your annual office pool — you’ll have a much better idea of what to watch for and (more importantly) what to listen for as you get to the Best Sound category on your ballot! Here are the nominees, in alphabetical order:

After its premiere at Sundance, this critically acclaimed drama was picked up by Amazon Studios and had its public debut in December 2020. Set in the late 1950s to early 1960s, the story is based around a tenor sax player, musicians, clubs and music fans—a rich palette for sound and music coming together to re-create both the period and the performance.

Creator and director Steve McQueen’s five-film series Small Axe, detailing the lives of London’s West Indian immigrants from the 1960s to 1980s, has had three “episodes” debut at the New York Film Festival and two more selected for the official competition at Cannes 2020. It premiered on the BBC, then Amazon Prime in November 2020 with a gritty, real, street-centered sound design central to the cinematic experience and equally riveting on the small screen.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to grow with the March 2021 release of the six-episode The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. While the overall themes might be familiar to viewers, the sound design and mix is unique, with pacing, dynamics and new environments driving the action.

As if filling out an Oscar ballot wasn’t challenging enough, the Academy has made a number of changes to the 2021 voting rules. Most notably for us here at Dolby, the Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories have been combined into one: Best Sound.

Glenn Kiser, Director of the Dolby Institute sits down with Keri Putnam, CEO of the Sundance Institute, Tabitha Jackson, the brand new director of the Sundance Film Festival, and Michelle Satter, director of the Sundance Labs, to answer all these questions and more. It’s a fascinating conversation about not just the challenges of hosting the Sundance Film Festival in 2021, but also the new opportunities this situation may have uncovered. Indeed, this year could become the road map for the future of The Institute, The Labs, and The Sundance Film Festival itself.

Randy Thom is Director of Sound Design at Skywalker Sound. He has been nominated for 14 Oscars, an Emmy, and a Grammy. He won Academy Awards for The Right Stuff and The Incredibles. Randy has received Career Achievement Awards from the Motion Picture Sound Editors and the Cinema Audio Society. After working in Public Radio Randy began his film career as an assistant to Walter Murch, recording helicopters, guns, and flies for Apocalypse Now, as well as assisting in the film’s 9 month mix, after which Ben Burtt hired him to work on The Empire Strikes Back. He was Production Mixer on Return of the Jedi, Rumblefish, and Never Cry Wolf; and has worked at Skywalker Sound for over 35 years. Randy has written numerous articles on film sound, and has been the leading proponent for the idea that sound design should begin in pre-production. His essay “Designing A Movie For Sound” is used in film curricula at universities around the world.
